Trying to fill the gap left by Damien Da Silva’s exit with Chelsea’s young defender Matt Miazga, Caen thought they’d managed to pull off a decent coup.
The 23-year-old was due to arrive on loan for a year with no option, and was even reportedly set for a medical with the Ligue 1 club on Tuesday, but as the saying goes: anything can happen in football.
We say this because the latest reports to come from France suggest that deal is now off, and the Chelsea centre-back will instead be heading to Nantes.
According to Tendance Ouest, Claudio Ranieri’s former club swooped in and convinced both the Blues and Miazga a move to the Atlantic coast would be better for everyone involved.
The local outlet state Waldemar Kita, Nantes’ president, had a private chat with the Chelsea man, using their Polish backgrounds as common ground to get him to change his mind.
However, it seems all is not lost for Caen, who could end up with one of Nantes’ players, Nicolas Pallois, whose exit would leave space for Miazga, and would be returning to the club he left 10 years ago.
It’s not exactly ideal, but at least it isn’t the end of the world.
