Ainsley Maitland-Niles failed to enjoy more game time at Arsenal in the first half of the season as he was restricted to only two league starts with the north London club.

In search for regular opportunities, the 24-year-old joined AS Roma on a loan deal on January 8th, and since moving to Italy, he has made three starts in the league for the Giallorossi.

Last summer, the Serie A side were keen on signing Maitland-Niles’ Arsenal teammate, Granit Xhaka, as José Mourinho is still an admirer of the Switzerland international and his side could return for Xhaka next summer.

On Monday, both Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Messaggero suggested the Italian club would look at Xhaka in the next window and also plan to carry out a deal for Maitland-Niles.

Today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport explains Roma chief Tiago Pinto is ‘already laying the groundwork’ for the summer, where Xhaka and 1899 Hoffenheim’s Florian Grillitsch are in his sights.

It’s claimed Mikel Arteta’s man could join Roma as a part of the operation that involves the ‘redemption of Maitland-Niles’.

If Mourinho’s side were to buy both, the newspaper suggests they could ‘snatch a better price from Arsenal’, for around €30m for the duo.
