Tuesday’s edition of Marca has Raphael Varane on the front page, with the defender being linked to clubs around Europe.

Those clubs include Chelsea, and Real Madrid are said to ‘know’ there’s interest from the Blues in signing the France international.

Varane’s contract expires in June 2022, and according to Marca there’s a feeling at Madrid that he’s tempted to run his contract down and then leave as a free agent.

Naturally, Madrid don’t want that to happen so if they can’t make progress on a renewal by the summer they’ll look to sell Varane to one of the interested clubs. Chelsea, Manchester United, Juventus and PSG are all mentioned, however, it feels like a collection of clubs thrown together with the aim of building hype around the situation.

Real Madrid would be looking for a fee in the region of €50m, a big amount for a player who will have less than a year left on his contract.

Whether Chelsea interest is genuine or not is questionable, and it’s quite possible Thomas Tuchel hasn’t yet even considered such a prospect, first wanting to get to know the defenders he already has at his disposal.
