As we all know, Willian’s contract at Chelsea is close to expiring, meaning he is currently free to talk to clubs about signing with them on a free.
He’s made it clear his views regarding a renewal differ from those in charge of such matters at Stamford Bridge (he wants three extra years, they want two), and a transfer away from the Blues is looking increasingly likely.
Il Messaggero cover his situation on Wednesday, explaining the Brazilian has been offered around Italy, notably to Inter and Juventus.
However, having already played under both Maurizio Sarri and Antonio Conte, he knows what to expect from both, and would rather try his luck elsewhere.
That’s where AS Roma come in, as they were also been given the chance to sign Willian, and the presence of Paulo Fonseca made the Serie A club ‘jump to the top of his list’.
At this point, the Italians were prepared to ‘delve into the outlines of a deal’, but the Chelsea’s player’s demands, a three-year deal worth €5m/year, ‘effectively blocked the negotiations’.
That ruled Roma out of the race, leaving Premier League clubs (a league Willian would like to stay in if possible) and the likes of Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain as likely destinations for a player entering the latter years of his career, but still asking for a lot of money.
