Edinson Cavani’s potential move to Boca Juniors is once again in the headlines of the Argentine media today.

This time, the reason for a story are the quotes of Sergio ‘Manteca’ Martinez, another long-haired Uruguayan who shined for the Buenos Aires side back in the 80s.

The former striker spoke to Cadena Xeneize and confirmed that the plan to sign the Manchester United star has been on for a while.

“All bosteros want Edi to come. We’ll see if it can happen in June. It’s the dream we all have,” Mantega Martínez told Cadena Xeneize (via TyC Sports).

“I spoke with his brother at the time, in the other transfer market, to tell him about Boca, but it couldn’t happen. Now we are all waiting to see if it can be done.”

Quizzed if Riquelme asked for his help on the signing, Martínez said: “A little yes and a little no. Roman reaches out to all the players, if he picks up the phone he can speak directly. At that time, Edi was playing at PSG with Leandro Paredes. There’s always an acquaintance who comes to the player, and all that brings the parties closer together.”

Mantega Martinez even made a special request regarding Boca Juniors’ new stadium in case Cavani is signed indeed.

“After Cavani said that he wanted to climb the fence, it’s impossible to get rid of that dream. Hopefully they don’t remove the fences so Cavani can climb up and shout the goals.”

Edinson Cavani’s contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the season, and that’s why his signing is affordable for a few South American sides, even though the deal with the Red Devils includes an option to renew it for one more year.

Besides Boca Juniors, other clubs such as Danubio and Nacional have been linked to the striker in the past few weeks as well.
