Having failed to sign Sven Botman from Lille, losing out to Newcastle, Milan have needed to look elsewhere to add depth to their defence.

Much like they did when they signed Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea, the Serie A side have turned their gaze on the Premier League, where Japhet Tanganga has caught their eye.

The defender didn’t really get a chance to work with Antonio Conte at Tottenham last year due to an injury, and with the player now 23, he needs regular game time to continue his progress.

Milan seem ready to give him that, after reports emerged that the player’s agents met with the Italian club last week, sparking rumours about a potential move for the former England U21 international.

Gazzetta dello Sport, looking at what the Serie A team could still do in this transfer window, examine their options in defence, before adding that ‘today, one of the avenues to integrate’ the defence ‘leads back to London’.

That’s when the Tottenham player is named, explaining to their readers that he ‘grew up in the club’s youth teams and then arrived in the first-team’.

He made 19 appearances in all competition for Spurs last season, picking up a red card (two yellows) in an early game against Crystal Palace back when Nuno Espírito Santo was in charge.

A knee injury ended his campaign early, and a lot will depend on what Conte wants to do with the player, because if he wants to keep him, then Milan’s approach isn’t really going to do a lot.

However, if he’s happy for Tanganga to head out and get some minutes, then Gazzetta dello Sport explain that ‘Milan’s favourite formula is the loan’, although they need to be wary of both Everton and Brentford, who could ‘come up with more convenient offers’.
