On the bench for the first three Premier League games of the campaign against Southampton, Chelsea and Wolves, Bryan Gil then disappeared from Antonio Conte’s squad at Tottenham for the next two fixtures.

That will have been due to the fact that he has been trying to negotiate a move away from Spurs over the past few weeks, with Valencia keen to bring him back on loan.

The Spaniard was loaned to the La Liga side during the second half of last season, where he instantly became a crowd favourite with his attacking prowess and dribbling, helping them go all the way to the final of the Copa del Rey against Real Betis.

They eventually lost that game, but Valencia did their best to make the move permanent, although that never happened.

He returned to Tottenham, who have been holding onto him despite negotiations taking place, as they don’t want to let him go unless they can bring in someone to replace him in their squad depth.

That is, in essence, what Radio Marca are reporting, claiming that ‘Valencia had an agreement with Tottenham and the player’, but Spurs ‘haven’t been able to sign anyone yet’.

That’s why Valencia ‘ensures that Bryan is not coming at this time’.

This is backed up by AS, who go as far as saying that Valencia ‘drops the signing’ of Gil after Tottenham reached out and told them they ‘will not give up’ the Spaniard, ‘who was willing to make a salary effort to return to Mestalla’.

Now, the La Liga side have to find someone else, with under 12 hours left in the transfer window.
