At the end of the summer transfer window, West Brom managed to mess up a move to sign Ignacio Camacho from Malaga.

Malaga would only let the midfielder go if a club paid his release clause, which had been set too low at €18m. Rather than snatching the opportunity of a very well priced deal, West Brom offered €15m upfront and a further €3m in bonuses.

Camacho had already told Malaga he wanted to join West Brom, and they’d made it public, but the Premier League club’s penny pinching saw the move collapse. It wasn’t the only failed transfer in the last days of West Brom’s summer window.

The club’s sporting director Francesc Arnau has told Marca that it was difficult with “the tensions that were experienced on the theme of Camacho, there were many hours of work.”

Malaga had to bring Camacho back into the fold and there were promises of a new contract, which haven’t been fulfilled yet.

There’s every chance West Brom could return for the 26 year old, but next time they’d be better off just paying the €18m. In full.
