There’s been a lot of speculation about what happened regarding Newcastle United’s failed attempt to sign Hugo Ekitike, with various outlets having different versions of events.

Earlier today, we covered a report from L’Union, who claimed Stade de Reims and the Magpies had been ‘very close’ to reaching an agreement for the player, although the Premier League side would have still needed to convince the 19-year-old of the move.

That’s one aspect everyone seems to agree on, as Newcastle are fighting against relegation at this moment in time, while Ekitike is comfortable at the Ligue 1 side in his first full season in the first-team.

Well, RMC Sport have a different version, reporting it on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the two sides ‘did reach a financial agreement of around €40m (bonuses included)’, but despite this, ‘Reims wanted, in the best of cases, to have Ekitike loaned until the end of the season’.

Either way, that didn’t happen, and it’s once again stated the player ‘wasn’t really seduced’ by the idea of heading to Newcastle, who ‘didn’t manage to make him change his mind’.

It’s then said part of the reason was he would be arriving ‘mid-season in a club that isn’t guaranteed to be in the elite for 2022-23’.
