With Chelsea accepting to loan Andrey Santos back to Vasco da Gama this year, it seemed everything was fine between the player and the Brazilian club.

A story from Globo Esporte, however, reveals that the Rio de Janeiro side owe the midfielder a big chunk of money related to his move to Stamford Bridge.

Vasco only owned 70% of the player’s rights, and when Chelsea paid them for the transfer, they were supposed to send the player the other 30%, which never happened.

When negotiating for his return on a loan because of the lack of a work permit, the Brazilian club promised pay him the amount in three instalments, despite his request to get all up front.

Vasco owe Andrey a total of R$12m (£1.96m), and promised to pay R$3.6m (£590k) in early March, R$6m (£980k) in late March and R$2.4m (£390k) in late April. Only one of those payments was made.

The club have other debts and are unlikely to pay the player so soon, so it becomes clear that when negotiating for his return, they made some compromises they couldn’t fulfil.

Andrey is loaned until the end of June, and as requested by Chelsea, he’s now been released to play the U-20 World Cup in Argentina. When returning to Vasco, he’ll only have a couple of more games until permanently moving to London, this time hopefully with a work permit.
