Picked for five out of six league games since his return from a knee injury, Dedryck Boyata is undoubtedly, when fit, a Brendan Rodgers favourite at Celtic.

On top of that, the 26-year-old has become something of a regular, again, when fit, for his country, picked for the last two squads, and playing 90 minutes against Mexico this time around.

In fact, the Belgian press reckon the Celtic defender gained major brownie points for his performance this time around, as he was statistically, by far, the best centre-back.

Never committing a foul and winning all of his duels, Celtic’s Boyata also completed 87% of his passes, proving he can play in Roberto Martinez’s team with no problems at all.

For someone who, with Vincent Kompany a doubt to be fit enough for the World Cup and Christian Kabasele having a torrid time against Japan, is one of players currently on the fringes of the squad, there’s every chance he’ll have made a good case for himself to be picked for the international break in March 2018.

If he continues to put in similar performances, well, Martinez might just have to include the Celtic player in his 23-man squad after all.
