Brighton and Hove Albion are set to pocket ‘a small amount’ from Real Betis this year for defender Martin Montoya, two years after he left the club.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say the Seagulls are set to receive something courtesy of ‘bonus objectives’ they set in the original deal.

Montoya joined Betis in 2020 and has since made 31 appearances for the club in all competitions as a squad member in Manuel Pellegrini’s squad.

At the time, the transfer was reported as a free, although reports from Spain made it clear there was some confusion on the matter.

While La Vanguardia offered no details on the deal and just stated that it had been ‘authorised’ by Brighton, Estadio stated the deal could be worth €1m with bonuses added on.

It seems neither was the case, though, with the same source now reporting that Montoya did arrive on a free.

According to them, Brighton ‘agreed to release’ the full-back in exchange for a ‘bonus for objectives’ down the line.

They make no mention of what those objectives are, but it seems they’ve been met or will have been met by the end of the season as it is stated that ‘a small amount will have to be paid’ to Brighton by Betis this year.

Whatever it is, that should come as good news for the Seagulls, whose budget looks set to be slightly bolstered by a deal negotiated nearly two years ago.

That’s smart business by anyone’s reckoning.
