Unable to make a space for himself at Brighton & Hove Albion, Kjell Scherpen was sent out on loan to Vitesse for the season.
The goalkeeper has been a regular starter for the Eredivise side this season, playing in all but one of the games he was available for, most recently in a 3-0 win over SC Cambuur.
However, that game ended early for the Brighton loanee, who left the pitch after 56 minutes due to an injury.
That caused some concerns, and it appears they were warranted, as Vitesse have now announced the player is out for the foreseeable future.
Taking to their website, the Eredivisie state the Brighton goalkeeper ‘will not be able to take place in goal in the coming weeks’ after suffering a knee injury in the game against Cambuur, and ‘will be operated on in Rijnstate this week’.
Whether he returns before 2022 remains to be seen, but Soccer News, who cover the news, believe the player will not ‘be able to make more minutes’ in this calendar year.
This will come as a blow for all involved, Brighton included, as the Premier League club will have wanted the 22-year-old to make as many appearances as possible this season to get experience under his belt.
