Newcastle United’s failed attempt to sign Marrony from Vasco da Gama has become well known in Brazil.

After scouting the player, the Magpies signalled they would make a bid, but it was later decided they would go for Allan Saint-Maximin instead.

Now the story is back in the headlines, since the 20-year-old has given a press conference on Wednesday and was asked about the transfer.

Marrony has confirmed the contacts, saying the interest has ‘arrived’ to him.

“I became aware of everything. I tried to focus on Vasco as much as possible. I know my form is not the same I had earlier this year,” said Marrony (via Globo Esporte). “Yes, it has arrived, but everyone has seen that it no longer exists. So, I focus on Vasco.”

The answer was followed by the most tricky question of the interview. Marrony was asked which Premier League club he likes to follow most, and the reply was quick.

“Newcastle.”

Even though Marrony is protected by a release clause of €35m, it’s been claimed in Brazil that €18m would be enough to take the player from the Rio de Janeiro side.

The 20-year-old is originally a winger, but has been playing as a centre-forward. He’s scored six goals in 33 games for the club this season, as they currently fight against relegation.
