A couple of months ago, we covered reports from Brazil claiming Manchester United are interested in signing Flamengo midfielder João Gomes.
Pointing out that may not have been the best source for transfer news, we said we should probably wait for this rumour to be backed up before buying it. And it turns out that today, there’s an update regarding this chase.
On Rubro News channel, journalist Julio Miguel Neto now claims Manchester United are sending emissaries to watch Gomes in action for Flamengo.
It’s said two officials are expected to be in Rio de Janeiro in the coming weeks to watch the midfielder in person.
The report does not have any details on prices or how much the Red Devils would be keen on spending on the 21-year-old. It’s just said that Flamengo are open to selling players this summer as long as good bids arrive.
The interesting thing about João Gomes is that he’s one of the players who’ve been fighting against Andreas Pereira for a place in Flamengo’s midfield. It turns out the youngster has been playing a little more than the Manchester United loanee.
The Rio de Janeiro club even had a deal to sign Pereira for €10m this summer, and are now expected to give up on it due to the big investment in a player who hasn’t been convincing. So perhaps all parties could end up finding a good deal here.
