Napoli were wise to avoid signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United this summer, as Victor Osimhen is ‘stronger’ than him anyway.

That’s according to journalist Sandro Sabatini, who believes all Ronaldo would have done for Napoli is give them ‘visibility’.

Ronaldo spent all summer trying to get out of Manchester United, having made it clear he wanted to leave and play for a club in the Champions League.

He found that a difficult thing to do, though, with none of the clubs he would want showing an interest in his signature.

That left him and his agent Jorge Mendes scouring the market for other options instead and one of those were Napoli.

Reports in the last weeks of the window made it clear that Mendes was trying to weave a deal with the Italian side.

That would have seen them selling striker Victor Osimhen to Manchester United for €100m + before then signing Ronaldo in turn, with United covering the majority of his wages.

It was a complicated operation that never got off of the ground, largely because of the sums involved, and Sabatini believes Napoli were right to turn it down.

“From a technical point of view, it is a questionable operation,” he told Radio Sportiva, relayed by Calcio Napoli 24.

“Victor Osimhen is stronger than Cristiano Ronaldo, but overall, it could have fit. The 100 million for Osimhen you can also take next year, it is in his destiny to leave.

“Cristiano Ronaldo you either get him now or you don’t. And if he had landed at Napoli, it would have given Aurelio De Laurentiis’ club great visibility.”
