Ajax will again be without Steven Berghuis when they travel to take on Aston Villa in the Europa Conference this week.

De Telegraaf report that Berghuis has been ruled out of the game and hasn’t travelled with the group to England for the second leg of their last 16 clash.

The Dutch side had been hoping that Berghuis, who missed the 1-1 draw in the first leg, could be fit for the game but manager John van’t Schip later expressed his doubts on Sunday that he would be available after he missed the clash with Fortuna Sittard.

That was after the midfielder had suffered a setback the day before in training and it appears he’s been unable to recover as he has been left out of the 23-man squad travelling to Birmingham for the clash with Aston Villa.

How Ajax deal with the absence remains to be seen, with Berghuis on seven goals and 10 assists in 26 games this season and very much a key part of the squad.

That’s a problem for them to overcome, as they did in the first leg, but a potential boost for Unai Emery and Aston Villa as they plan their own plan for the upcoming game.
