When Lucas Digne injured his ankle, there was a big worry the left-back could miss a lengthy period of time, as well as the World Cup in Qatar, but it seems he’ll be fit to face Newcastle United at the weekend.

While he wasn’t actively guaranteed a spot in Didier Deschamps’ plans, the defender was among the candidates for a spot in the 26 players chosen, but the injury put that in doubt.

Soon after, however, L’Equipe in France stated that following some exams, the hairline fracture wasn’t as bad as first feared, and it was said two to three weeks would be enough to see him back on a football pitch.

Their estimated deadline was mid-October, and that wasn’t far off, as the same newspaper now claim the player ‘will make his return in the group on Saturday against Newcastle’.

They state that after taking part in group training sessions last week, Digne is now ‘fit to be selected’ by Aston Villa for the Premier League fixture.

Whether he starts remains to be seen, but it’s made clear he now has four games (Newcastle game included) to ‘prove that he can be a solution’ for the France national team, where, behind Théo Hernández, he would find competition from Ferland Mendy.
