North Macedonia beat Italy last week to end the chance of Roberto Mancini’s side being at the World Cup.
The reaction immediately afterwards was of course very emotional in Italy, and the country’s football media went into something of a grieving process. There was a lot of anger directed at various people, with the manager getting some criticism despite taking Italy to Euros triumph last year.
Mancini has a contract until 2026, but whether he’ll fulfil that, or be allowed to, isn’t certain at this stage, and Newcastle United have been named as a potential destination.
Corriere dell Sera report ‘he asked for time’, holding off the English ‘temptation’, with Newcastle the only side mentioned.
In a Monday press conference, Mancini was asked if he’s staying, and TMW quote him as saying: “We talked to the president in recent days, we are aligned on everything. It’s nice, then we’ll talk about it in the next few days: now let’s think about this game, then calmly discuss things to improve for the future. That’s all.”
Italy face Turkey this week, in what seems like a humiliating match for both countries. Corriere dell Sera believe a decision will come soon after that, and they clearly believe Newcastle will want to know what it is.
