This summer, it had always been well known that Julian Weigl was close to leaving Benfica. Not in Roger Schmidt’s plans, the midfielder has been linked with a departure from the Eagles for a while.

In the final days of the transfer window, a surprising potential destination showed up, which was Arsenal. That option was reported by the English media, and despite being covered by a few Portuguese websites, it was never really taken seriously by the Lisbon newspapers.

It turns out that just as expected, Weigl is close to a move back to Germany, as according to reports today, he’s arriving at Borussia Monchengladbach for his medical today.

And as the rumours about Arsenal are forgotten by most outlets, newspaper O Jogo today brings a line to dismiss that.

As they report the Monchengladbach move, it’s also written that the Gunners were even named as an interested club, but that ‘does not correspond to the reality’, with the player moving to Germany instead.

So even though Arsenal have indeed been linked to a bunch of midfielders lately, it seems Weigl was never an option.
