According to a claim in the German media, Hamburg forward Nicolai Müller may have played his last game for the Bundesliga club.
The forward was linked with a move to West Ham United in the last summer transfer window, and he’ll become a free agent at the end of the season.
Hamburger Morgenpost have reported Muller may not turn out for Hamburg again this season due to the injury he picked up earlier in the campaign.
The German is reportedly making slow progress from the knee injury he sustained whilst celebrating a goal, and it’s looking unlikely he will risk making a premature return.
With Hamburg also facing relegation to Bundesliga 2 for the first time in their history the chances of Muller renewing his contract are looking remote.
This could give the chance for West Ham to come in for Muller in the summer and land the player on a free transfer.
We covered reports last summer that West Ham were showing an interest in the 30 year old, and the attacker was being valued in the region of €8-10m.
If the Hammers were to reignite their interest in Muller they would expect to face competition from Schalke.
However, West Ham have an advantage over the German side as they can now speak to Muller with regards to a pre contract agreement.
