Pau Lopez spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur as the club’s third choice goalkeeper. With Hugo Lloris very much first choice, the plan was for Lopez to be signed last summer on a permanent deal and then be a long term option to replace the Frenchman at Spurs.
However, Tottenham and Espanyol couldn’t come to an agreement, and Lopez returned to the Barcelona club. Doing well this season, Espanyol have been trying to get Lopez to renew his deal, which ends in the summer, but that’s now looking increasingly unlikely.
Saturday’s edition of AS explains in it’s Espanyol section that FC Girona are keen on Lopez, but they’d need Manchester City to do the deal for them.
Manchester City would sign Lopez and then loan him out to their partner club, with there being no suggestion the former Tottenham loanee could at any stage become an option for Pep Guardiola.
There’s no indication of when a deal would be done, but the idea may be a cheap or free deal and then to wait for the chance to cash in on Pau Lopez in the future. Perhaps that was part of what Tottenham wanted too.
