The Wolves mania in Portugal has reached a level where a simple Monday Championship win has given the club almost an entire page in a newspaper.
It’s with great pride that A Bola reports yesterday’s result, as Wolves beat Birmingham City away with a 1-0 score.
With its headline saying ‘Nuno closer to promotion’, the newspaper shows that manager Nuno Espírito Santo has now won 15 of his 20 league games since landing in England last summer.
Besides the manager, Wolves currently have six Portuguese players in the squad: Ivan Cavaleiro, Rúben Neves, Hélder Costa, Diogo Jota, Rúben Vinagre, Pedro Gonçalves. That’s why every week, you can find a story about the club.
And there’s also Léo Bonatini, who despite being Brazilian, has previously played for Portuguese side Estoril, and always gets a mention from the local newspapers. Yesterday, he scored Wolves’ winner once again, and now has 12 goals since signing for the club last summer.
All this lovely positive coverage is not only winning Wolves fans in Portugal, but also acting as something of a PR crusade. When Ruben Neves to Wolves rumours started, the whole thing seemed slightly ridiculous, but that wouldn’t be the case now.
