Things may be about to get a lot more difficult for Liverpool in their chase for the Lazio defender Stefan De Vrij.

As reported by Italian outlet Il Messagero this Tuesday, the player is ‘one step’ from signing a new three-year contract at Lazio, which would commit him to the club until 2020.

The outlet recalls that the player has been in contact with several other clubs recently, including Juventus, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, but could end up staying in Rome instead.

Lazio’s offer had been of a €3m salary and a €30m release clause, but the terms negotiated by the player’s representatives are still not clear. This has been the situation for a while.

Despite not showing 100% confidence about the deal, Il Messagero say the news of the renewal could come out before Lazio’s derby against Roma next Saturday.

However, even if the new contract is signed, the newspaper makes it clear that it would not guarantee that the player wouldn’t leave next summer. Money talks, after all, and Liverpool could have another chance, as long as they accept to spend a little bit more.
