Scoring 11 goals in his first 11 games for Manchester United, Romelu Lukaku’s start to his Old Trafford was pretty much perfect.
However, the Belgium international hasn’t scored in his last six games, and while he’s still assisting his teammates (against Huddersfield and Tottenham), many would much rather see him put the ball in the back of the net.
We’re some way off a general discontent among the fans with his performances, but if the drought continues, and results start to drop off because of it, things could get a bit ugly.
Yet, if it does happen, it’s worth pointing out the Manchester United striker is no stranger from receiving abuse from his fans.
Never seemingly able to please Belgium supporters, Lukaku has been criticised by both the crowd and the local press, despite scoring 28 goals in 63 caps.
Of course, a lot of it comes from them knowing what he is capable of doing when he’s on his game, but he’s manage to deal with it pretty well.
One man who feels all this criticism is unwarranted is his national team and former Everton manager Roberto Martinez, giving his two cents on the matter to Sport/Foot in Belgium.
He said: “I really don’t know where the criticism comes from. All I see with Romelu is his obsession to become the best, and what he can do at his age, it’s incredible. People want to see him play perfectly, but it’s impossible.
“Everyone can have their opinion, of course, but I’d be happy to criticise him if his attitude at training wasn’t good or if he didn’t work hard enough, but it’s the exact opposite!”.
