Ahead of Atlético Madrid-Chelsea on Wednesday, AS had a chat with Abel Resino, who tried to keep the Spanish side’s goal as safe as possible for nine years between 1986 and 1995.
In the build up to games, it’s normally all about who will score, or the each team’s superstar, yet, instead of Antoine Griezmann vs Eden Hazard, the newspaper go for the big Jan Oblak vs Thibaut Courtois battle.
After all, it makes sense, considering the Belgian shot stopper spent a few years on loan in Madrid before the Slovenian made Atlético’s goalkeeping spot his own.
Asked who he would prefer between the La Liga side’s sticks these days, the 57-year-old said: “They dominate nearly every aspect of the game, they are great one on one, not bad with their feet. Perhaps I would say what stands out with Oblak over Courtois is his level of concentration.
“It’s very important. I watched Obalk in the game against Sevilla. I took a good look at the details and I loved his level of concentration. Even though it looked like he wasn’t participating, he was. He’s very focus. There I think Oblak outshines Courtois. If I had to choose, I would stay with the Slovenian”.
Even though some might say the former Atlético Madrid goalkeeper is bias towards the 24-year-old, it would be interesting to see how many would disagree with him.
Both players have made six league appearances for their club this season, keeping three clean sheets each.
While Courtois has conceded five goals (three of which came in one game), Oblak has only conceded four.
In what is likely to be a tight game on Wednesday, a great goalkeeper performance could be the difference.
