Andreas Samaris’ name was much seen during the transfer window this summer.
The Greek international had been linked to several English clubs, such as West Brom, Everton and especially Newcastle United, and then all the speculation went away.
Although the Magpies seemed to be the club who came closest to signing the Benfica player, A Bola has different information today, saying it was West Brom who almost won the race.
They claim the deal was close to being done for almost €20m, but it was the Portuguese side, rather than West Brom, who called it off.
The 28-year-old still didn’t play this season due to a four-match ban, but was important for the club in their last title campaign, with 18 league appearances.
West Brom’s interest makes some sense, given the Turkish press report they’re currently trying to sign defensive midfielder Josef de Souza from Fenerbahce.
