Leeds United defender Giuseppe Bellusci’s permanent move to Empoli in the summer is hanging in the balance, following this weekend’s round of Serie A games. The 28-year-old is currently on loan with Empoli from Leeds United, and his move to the Tuscan club will depend if they remain in the top flight.

Only a few weeks ago Empoli opened a five point gap (four going into the weekend games) over third from bottom Crotone, and they seemed destined to be playing in Serie A next season. However, Crotone have put together a run of results in recent games, which has been dubbed the ‘Miracle of Crotone’.

The Italian side have now cut the gap to just one point with two league games remaining, and they have the momentum going into the season’s finale. Crotone have the harder run-in than Empoli, but as they’ve recently shown they can beat some of Serie A’s bigger teams.

This could have a bearing on whether Bellusci will leave Leeds United for Empoli in the next window. Last month there were reports the defender would be joining Empoli on a permanent deal for €2m, but a deal was unlikely to happen if they dropped into Serie B. At this stage of his career the Leeds United outcast will not be wanting to play in the Italian second tier, after years previously playing in Serie B.

It’s unlikely he still has a future with Leeds United, and come the summer he may need to convince another Serie A club to take him.
