Ajax’s interest in Burnley flop Wout Weghorst would make little sense, unless the Dutch side are planning to sell Brian Brobbey this summer.
That’s according to analysts Rafael van der Vaart and Pierre van Hooijdonk, who have been discussing the interest in Weghorst today.
The striker has been linked with a return to the Netherlands this summer, with FC Twente and Ajax both credited with interest in him.
The striker is returning to Burnley this summer after a loan spell in Germany but is expected to be moved on by the Clarets, having previously left the club on loan for Besiktas after making it clear he didn’t want to play in the Championship.
That goal demonstrated his qualities and put him front and centre once again, much in the same way his performance against Argentina at the World Cup did.
Indeed, reports of Ajax’s interest in the Burnley striker seemed to be thanks to his latest goal for his country, but Van der Vaar and Van Hooijdonk are wary.
“No, he would not have been my first choice,” the former said when asked if he’d be a good option for Ajax.
“He’s not the first one I would think of, but I do think there is something loose in such a group. You see that now, of course. That wanting to win, wanting to get minutes, wanting to score that goal. I really like watching it.
“But at the moment, any reinforcement at Ajax is welcome,” he added.
“I don’t really see that happening, or at least: Ajax won’t do that,” suggested Van Hooijdonk.
“You don’t get Weghorst for the bench. He is too expensive a customer for that, so then you will have to do something with Brobbey, I think.”
