Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is now far from the rumours of a Manchester United transfer which circled him for a while. Last summer he agreed a transfer to Al-Hilal, and the stories about a huge money move in Europe naturally stopped.
Still, that potential transfer was today brought back in the Italian media, as former Lazio sporting director Igli Tare was interviewed by TVPlay.
In quotes brought by TuttoMercatoWeb, Tare revealed that Manchester United placed a €100m+ offer to sign Milinkovic-Savic, and that was turned down by the Serie A side at the time.
“A lot of things have been said about Milinkovic-Savic that are not true, from his departure at zero to the fact that he didn’t want to stay, the only thing that is true is that Lotito turned down a very important offer, over €100m, from AC Milan and Manchester United,” said Tare.
Something interesting is that the story is showing up in the same week that Milinkovic-Savic was linked to a move back to Europe. Reports from the Italian media claimed that the likes of Arsenal and Juventus are both interested in signing him.
Al-Hilal spent €40m to sign him in the summer, and it’s unknown how much they’d demand for his sale, as they have him under contract until 2026.
There’s no suggestion Manchester United would be interested again, and the claimed offer, even if Tare’s claims are true, was obviously a few years ago.
