Newcastle United defender Fabian Schär has revealed his decision to take up a director’s role at FC Wil is the “perfect preparation” for when his playing career comes to an end.
The Newcastle centre-back was today confirmed as part of a new look boardroom at FC Wil, with Jetzt covering the details and comments from the Switzerland international on the matter.
They explain that Schär has taken up a role on the board of directors at the club, despite still being under contract and playing with Newcastle, as ‘a matter of the heart’ after he grew up in the town and made his debut in the Champions League there in 2009.
From that small town in Eastern Switzerland his path led to Basel, Hoffenheim, Deportivo La Coruña and then Newcastle in the Premier League.
Thus, he couldn’t turn down the chance to get involved when it arose, with him set to sit beside club president Maurice Weber and newly elected entrepreneur Markus Mettler on the board of directors.
It’s a role he’s extremely happy with and one he admits he’s taken up very much with an eye to the future.
“FC Wil 1900 is my childhood, youth and passion club,” Schär was quoted as saying in a statement from the club.
“The fact that I can now help shape the club’s strategic path is perfect preparation for life after my football career.”
