Arsenal loanee Wojciech Szczęsny wants to stay where he is, according to the head of the Polish FA.

Zbigniew Boniek, who played for both Juventus and Roma and is currently in charge of his country’s football association, has spoken to Centro Suono Desporto about the goalkeeper’s situation.

Asked if Szczęsny will remain at Roma or return to Arsenal at the end of the season, Boniek said: “Szczesny? I do not know what his future will be, you have to see what happens. I talked to him last night at dinner, he says he wants to stay in Rome to play again with Roma, he clearly has a high salary and you have to see if Roma can afford his transfer.” (via Forza Roma)

The former player has also made very interesting claims about the possibility of Arsene Wenger leaving the club, which would impact upon the player.

“He is very good in Roma, this I can assure you, if Wenger stays, I don’t believe he’ll remain at Arsenal, with another coach he could return to London. In 2019, the contract expires, then in June we decide his future in one way or another.”

Apart from the player’s will, that’s not much different from what the Italian press have been saying. It’s no secret that Szczesny’s wages, with Arsenal handing the goalkeeper a big contract, are too expensive for Roma and this is the biggest issue in finding a deal right now.

Szczęsny was loaned to Roma in 2015, and the spell has been satisfactory both for the club as for the player. That’s a very similar situation to Joe Hart at Torino.
