Jannik Vestergaard has a year left on his deal and is expected to leave Leicester City this summer.
The centre-back saw his game time drastically reduced last season, when he was restricted to 193 minutes of action from three games. This didn’t stop him from attracting interest from Saudi Arabia.
According to BT in Denmark, the Leicester defender has rejected a contract offer of $6m from an unnamed Saudi club.
The 30-year-old has given an interview to the same outlet and explained his reasons for not accepting this proposal.
“I don’t want to comment on the club’s name, because it’s not fair, but I can only say my sporting ambitions matter most. I’ve always chosen a club based on what I believed would be a good step-up football-wise,” he said.
An injury setback forced him to miss the last few fixtures of last season. The player now claims he’s regained full fitness and is enjoying pre-season training under Enzo Maresca’s orders.
Despite this, the Denmark international is still eyeing a move away from Leicester after their relegation from the Premier League. The former Southampton man has made it clear where he would like to play next season.
“Honestly, I’m going after the five big leagues, and I understand from my agent that there is good interest. I have big sporting ambitions, and there is plenty of time left in the window, so I think it looks good,” Vestergaard explained.
On whether he could leave Leicester, the Dane said: “.I firmly believe that the club and I agree that I can get away now.”
