Former Leeds United forward Mirco Antenucci has told the Italian media he wasn’t expecting what SPAL have achieved in his first season at the club. The 31-year-old left Leeds United ten months ago at the end of his contract, with no efforts to get the Italian to renew.
“In my first year I was certainly not expecting this at all. However, the results are giving us reason to believe. We are growing and we’ve got this far, March will be an important month,” said Antenucci.
Antenucci spent two seasons at Elland Road following his move from Ternana in 2014, and was the top scorer at the club in his first season in England. The Italian exited the club last May when his contract expired, and has since gone on record criticising the Massimo Cellino regime.
However, with his goalscoring form this season Leeds United may be regretting not extending the contract of Antenucci. Garry Monk has had to rely on Chris Wood providing the goals this season, and the Italian could have been the ideal back up to the Championship’s top scorer.
