Manchester United’s decision to wait for defender signing could backfire in the summer

Manchester United’s decision to leave the signing of Victor Lindelof for a later date may not have been very good, after all.

That’s because some heavy competition have shown up during the past few days, according to reports from Calciomercato.it.

The website claims that besides José Mourinho’s side, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich have all joined the race as well.

They say Juventus and Real Madrid, who want a replacement for Pepe, are currently the best positioned sides for now, which certainly won’t please Mourinho.

Despite all the claims saying Manchester United had agreed a fee for Lindelof, the reason why it didn’t happen was never really revealed.

Some say Benfica didn’t want to sell, others that it was José Mourinho who gave up on the signing.

With the new contract agreed with Benfica, Lindelof now has a €60m release clause. Although the reports from January said Benfica wanted around €45m, this competition should see them raise their demands even more if they feel they can get a bidding war started.
