Netherlands manager Danny Blind has an increasing problem with Dutch internationals not got getting enough minutes. The national team have been going through a slump since the last World Cup and players being second choice at their clubs is a real issue.
A major problem for Blind is the goalkeeping position with only PSV’s Jeroen Zoet playing regularly. Tottenham’s Michel Vorm is just one of the others who spend most of their season playing second fiddle.
Speaking on Dutch TV over the weekend, and quoted by Voetbal Primeur, Blind explained: “Vorm plays really good but plays only FA Cup. Cillessen plays only in the Copa del Rey and the replacement of Stekelenburg has performed well since his injury.
“I do not contact them all individually. Frans Hoek (goalkeeping coach) has the most contact with them. He explains the state of affairs to me every Tuesday. He speaks to them every week.”
Vorm is in the situation that if he was first choice goalkeeper somewhere he’d have a great chance of nailing down the Netherlands spot as his own. Mauricio Pochettino isn’t likely to dispense with Lloris in favour of the Dutchman, so barring serious injury to the Frenchman, Vorm will struggle to get the game time Blind wants.
This all fits perfectly with claims from Spain last week that Vorm is likely leaving Tottenham in the next window. Pochettino loaned Pau Lopez from Espanyol in the summer, and the deal is expected to be made permanent.
The young goalkeeper would then, according to the Spanish claims, replace Vorm as second choice at Tottenham, leading the elder man towards the exit.
Vorm going elsewhere and being first choice could then lead to him becoming Blind’s reliable pick between the posts.
