Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye has admitted he is “really disappointed” to be missing Senegal’s clash with England at the World Cup.

England take on Senegal on Sunday in the last 16 of the tournament in Qatar after sealing their progression with a win over Wales earlier this week.

Senegal also secured their progression with a 2-1 win over Ecuador on Tuesday, with those three points seeing them finishing second on six points and two ahead of the team they beat.

Gueye has been a key player in his country’s progression to this point but will be missing from the clash with England after picking up a suspension over an accumulation of yellow cards.

That’s a bitter blow for him and his team, who would have been relying on his knowledge of the England squad, many of whom he competes against on a regular basis at Everton, to help them through a tie in which they will be the underdogs.

Instead, he will be watching from the sidelines, something the Everton man admits is a major disappointment for him.

“I am really disappointed,” Senbaat report him saying.

“But I’m happy for the team. I just hope they can get the job done and I can play in the quarterfinals.

“We keep saying in training and all the time that we need the whole team, and we can only do it together in this kind of competition.

“We have a lot of experience in the CAN and in this kind of competition you need everybody, not just 11 or 12 players. Everyone has to commit.

“The substitutes have to work hard in training to be ready in case the manager brings them on. I congratulated the whole team because they were all like that.”
