Cast your mind back to last year and you’ll remember the saga of Youssef En Nesyri and West Ham quite well.
Long before Gianluca Scamacca was the chosen man to revive the Hammers’ fortunes up front, it appeared En Nesyri was the one they wanted.
A €40m bid was first lodged in the January transfer window and rejected by Sevilla, who simply weren’t interested in selling at that point.
That didn’t put off West Ham, though, and they returned in the summer with the same offer in an attempt to lure the Moroccan to London.
They say that the strike has been ‘one of the focal points of anger’ among the Sevilla faithful at the beginning of this season as he keeps missing clear chances.
After a superb first year at the club En Nesyri’s form has somewhat fallen off a cliff and there is a belief he is ‘far from the level’ he is expected to be at.
That’s led fans to grow ‘tired of him’, a situation exacerbated by Sevilla’s poor start to the season in which they have picked up one point from four games.
The striker’s form is ‘starting to tire’ the Andalusians and his poor form is ‘not in line’ with what they want or expect. It has also led to questions about why he wasn’t sold, with Monchi insisting there is no interest in him at this moment in time.
They’re now looking back at the proposal from West Ham, which now seems ‘far away’ and one ‘many regret not having accepted’ at the time.
The Hammers, meanwhile, are probably thinking they’ve dodged another extremely expensive mistake.
