Newcastle United’s deal for Kieran Trippier could be cursed, with his replacement at Atlético Madrid also suffering an injury shortly after his arrival.
That’s according to Super Deporte, who cover how both Trippier and Daniel Wass have ended up injured not long after their moves in January.
The newspaper explains there has been a ‘curse’ in the operation for the two players, with both injured ‘shortly after making their debuts’ for their new clubs.
Trippier joined Newcastle from Atlético in January, a move which led the Spanish to move for Wass at Valencia.
After several weeks of ‘tug-of-war’ with their fellow Spaniards, they got their man, but the move has ‘not gone well for them’ since.
He was a late substitute in that game but suffered a knee injury, which was later confirmed as a ‘grade 2 sprain in the internal lateral ligament’. In other words, a long-term injury that should keep him out for a while.
Something the man he replaced, Trippier, has also suffered. He’s been a shining light for Newcastle in the last few games, with his strike against Aston Villa securing all three points over the weekend.
He pulled out of that game in the second half, and it’s since been confirmed he’s fractured his foot and will face an extended period out injured as a result.
That’s a huge blow to Newcastle but also means the Wass-Trippier operation could ‘not have got off to a worse start.’
Both have been injured not long after making their debuts, although Tripper ‘at least’ lasted one more game and managed to score for his new team as well.
Not that that will be much consolation for Eddie Howe and co, whose best deal in January appears to have been hit by a ‘curse’.
