Dutch outlet De Telegraaf today features a story which talks down Marc Overmars’ potential move from Ajax to Newcastle United.
Their report starts by saying the official has been one of the Magpies’ top three candidates for the director job, as his name popped up ‘almost immediately’ following the club’s takeover.
It’s said Newcastle have invited Overmars to ‘a first meeting in England’, and ‘after much deliberation’, the 48-year-old has decided not to even speak to the Premier League side.
De Telegraaf claims the main reason for that is the ‘sporting crisis’ the Magpies are going through. The fact they’re now at the bottom of the table is seen as a serious issue, as the Dutchman could leave a Champions League side to work at a Championship club next season.
Now besides the current campaign, it’s also pointed out that the ‘fierce competition’ for the Premier League’s top six means it would still take ‘years’ until Newcastle are finally able to compete for the top spots.
With Ajax in the ‘European elite’, that’s seen by Overmars as the safest option for now.
