David Wagner to Wolfsburg: ‘The deal is not yet perfect’
David Wagner is right now one of the biggest stories in the German sport media. The Huddersfield Town manager is on the verge of being appointed Wolfsburg boss if some claims are to be believed, but there’s been some calm thrown on the situation.
For Wolfsburg news, the Wolfsburger Allgemaine, usually referred to as WAZ, newspaper is usually the most level headed. The big hitters at Bild, Europe’s biggest selling newspaper, do get scoops related to Wolfsburg but they’re more excitable.
That’s not to dismiss Bild, and it was they who Julian Draxler gave his summer ‘I want to leave’ interview which started Wolfsburg’s terrible season off.
Bild reckon Wagner leaving Huddersfield for Wolfsburg is a sure thing and could be announced this week. WAZ say it’s not that simple and those claims are ‘somewhat premature’.
WAZ still make Wagner joining Wolfsburg sound like a distinct possibility, but they insist the Huddersfield manager hasn’t agreed to take over yet: ‘The deal is not yet perfect’
Just like Kicker did on Monday morning, WAZ say Wagner has an exit clause at Huddersfield, which would make things easier for Wolfsburg. Further talks are set to take place with the manager on Wednesday.
Funding has been cut back from Volkswagen and it’s not too much of an exaggeration to say Wolfsburg are a bit of a basket case at the moment.
Draxler recently reiterated his desire to leave, which led to him being banished from the team, and then quickly brought back again. Mario Gomez has found himself in trouble from the club after questioning the way the Draxler situation has been dealt with.
The club’s general manager, what would be called a sports director here, Klaus Aloffs left just over a week ago, and it’s a bit of a circus at the moment.
Still, Wolfsburg are a huge club and David Wagner will of course be tempted, but he’ll probably want to find out just how big the mess is, and what plans are in place to clean it up, before he leaves Huddersfield.
