Snubbing a move to Arsenal and signing for AS Monaco instead, Djibril Sidibé did what many footballers fail to do, which was to think about their career first rather than the money.

Deciding he would play more football by staying in Ligue 1, the right-back said no to Arsène Wenger, but never closed the door for a move to the Premier League.

Still, the right-back, who has since earned his first caps for France, surprised a few people a few weeks ago when he was quoted as saying he would leave for the Premier League ‘next year’, which probably didn’t go down to well at Monaco.

We covered the interview with Le Parisien at the time, but the player felt he wasn’t quoted properly, or rather, his quotes were ‘misinterpreted’.

Sidibé, during a press conference on Wednesday, decided to clarify the situation.

He said, relayed by L’Equipe: “It’s an interpretation problem. I’ve always said the Premier League made me dream, like other players before me, but this isn’t something I think about today. I’m very happy at Monaco, and I could stay here many years.”

That should make things a little better, but if he continues to impress as he has done so far for Monaco, rumours about a premature move across the Channel will certainly start again, and those quotes will resurface extremely quickly.
