This morning, a report from The Mirror suggested Real Madrid defender Pepe could be on his way to Chelsea.

As the 33-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, the player would be considering to make a free move to the Stamford Bridge next summer.

The article suggested that the Spanish club offered Pepe a one-year deal, but his advisers were pushing for a two-year extension.

Unintentionally clarifying matters, the defender gave an interview to AS this Wednesday about his possible contract extension, but made sure not to put any pressure on the Real Madrid board.

He mentioned his love for the club as a reason why he’ll wait until they contact him with a new deal on the table.

“I’m calm, I love this club very much and everyone knows it. My time will come and I wait calmly”, Pepe told AS.

“I hope the club calls me to sort my situation. I’m calm, they know this is my home. As I said, I’ll wait until the last second.”

Asked if he hopes to stay in Madrid until the end of his career, the player confirmed: “Yes, of course, my objective is to retire here.”

Pepe joined Real Madrid from Porto in 2007 for €30m, and already has 321 appearances for the Spanish giants. His last contract extension was in August 2015.
