West Ham have seen a bid for River Plate right-back Gonzalo Montiel rejected by the Argentinian club.

According to TyC Sports, the Hammers are keen on the 23-year-old defender and made a bid for his services ‘in recent hours’.

TyC claim that the Hammers’ initial bid was to sign Montiel on loan until the end of the season, paying €500,000 to do so, and then include a purchase option for €10m at the end of it.

This bid was dismissed out of hand by River Plater, who have ‘flatly refused’ to negotiate with West Ham over one of their prized assets.

Montiel is one of Marcelo Gallardo’s key players, having made 90 appearances since his debut in 2016, and TyC assert that he will remain at the club despite West Ham’s interest in him.

Whether that will deter David Moyes and co from making another bid is unknown, but given that River seem to have made their stance pretty clear, they may be best served looking at other targets.
