Marseille drew 1-1 away to Angers on Sunday, and did so without Tottenham’s Clinton N’Jie.
In the previous match against Nantes, N’Jie had been crucial to a 2-1 victory, scoring Marseille’s equalising goal. Playing at the top with Bafetimbi Gomis, the Tottenham loan player worked well in the team.
French newspaper L’Equipe named N’Jie as one of the match’s best three players, and said he was proving to be a ‘nightmare’ for defenders.
Given the two good matches, it looked like N’Jie was really settling in, and Marseille’s €7m buying option from Tottenham appeared to be a potential bargain.
That could still be the case, but N’Jie has been hit by another injury. He wasn’t able to be named in the squad to face Angers because he picked up a muscle injury in training. N’Jie felt pain in his thigh and had to withdraw from training, with the Tottenham player suffering from a muscle injury.
N’Jie’s time with Tottenham was partly hampered by injury, and it’s a cruel blow to the player that he’s had to stop playing just as he was doing so well. It’s a blow for Marseille too, Gomis played upfront on his own against Angers and largely failed to impress, whilst former Newcastle United player Remy Cabella had a poor game on the left.
