On Wednesday night, Borussia Monchengladbach welcome Barcelona in the Champions League, and there’s obviously build-up in the Spanish media.
Whilst not a completely unknown quantity, Gladbach obviously don’t get regular coverage in the Spanish media, so Marca have picked out a few pointers for fans to learn more.
Of course, with Thorgan Hazard being the brother of Chelsea superstar Eden, he gets some attention.
Marca point out that whilst nobody would argue Thorgan is more talented than his brother at Chelsea, they say the recent statistics would show otherwise. The Gladbach member of the Hazard family is talked about very positively, and the Spanish newspaper say he was born with a ball under his arm, explaining the family’s love of the game.
Chelsea’s rather useful buyback clause is then mentioned, with the Premier League club able to activate it for €15m. However, they have to inform Gladbach of that in December, then see Thorgan return to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Marca suggest that a Chelsea return could indeed happen, and of course the club should be considering it. A good performance against Barcelona this week, and in the second game between the sides on December 6th, could well be the signal Chelsea need to enforce their clause.
It will be difficult for Thorgan Hazard to impose himself, he may not even start, but the 23 year old must be well aware this is a brilliant opportunity, and surely he knows Chelsea will be watching.
