Last month, we relayed news from Spain that Matthijs de Ligt is ‘closer’ to Manchester City, while there are other clubs interested in the Ajax defender.

The Eredivisie outfit have agreed a deal worth €75m plus €11m in variables with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong and they could be in line to earn a similar fee by allowing the 19-year-old to leave the club.

Today’s edition of Catalan newspaper Sport claims the centre-back is one of the targets for the La Liga winners in the next transfer window, but the ‘competition is strong’ to sign the Netherlands international.

It is explained that apart from Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in the defender and his initial price tag was set at €75m + €11m in variables.

However, the interest from the latter two clubs has caused De Ligt’s ‘price to skyrocket’ and Sport mentions that in Italy they are claiming that Ajax are demanding €85m to €90m for the player.

De Ligt is managed by Mino Raiola and the report suggests the agent’s actions can also influence his client’s decision in selecting his next destination.

After losing out De Jong to Barcelona, will Pep Guardiola be successful in landing De Ligt?
