Huge news for West Ham as it looks like they have reached an agreement to sign Gustavo Sá from Famalicão, with the Portuguese midfielder set to complete a €20m (£17.3m) move to England.
After months of speculation surrounding his future, the transfer is now considered agreed. Both V+ and Record report that the deal is worth around €20m (£17.3m), with the 21-year-old preparing for the first move abroad of his career.
The fee falls short of the €25m (£21.6m) Famalicão initially hoped to receive during negotiations. Even so, it will become the biggest sale in the club’s history, surpassing the revenue they generated from the staged sale of Manuel Ugarte, which ultimately brought in around €19.7m (£17m).
Record-breaking departure
Gustavo Sá has spent virtually his entire development at Famalicão, joining the club’s academy at Under-15 level in 2018 before making his senior debut in the 2022-23 campaign.
He leaves having made 120 first-team appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists. Last March he also became the youngest player ever to reach 100 appearances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, underlining both his consistency and the trust placed in him from a young age.
Last season he again established himself as one of Famalicão’s standout performers, combining creativity with the ability to play as both an attacking midfielder and a deeper central option.
His technical quality and work rate have seen him linked with Premier League clubs for well over a year before West Ham accelerated their pursuit. He even caught eyes at Manchester City and Juventus recently.
Championship challenge awaits
The move now gives Gustavo Sá his first experience outside Portugal, although it comes in unusual circumstances for West Ham.
Rather than joining a Premier League side, he is arriving after the Hammers’ relegation, with the London club preparing for a Championship campaign and aiming for an immediate return to the top flight.
A fee of €20m (£17.3m) also represents a significant investment by Championship standards, highlighting how highly West Ham rate the Portugal Under-21 international and the role they expect him to play in their promotion push.
