West Ham United have again ‘expressed their interest’ in Ajax’s Steven Bergwijn this summer but need to sell to buy first.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, who report that West Ham are interested in the Dutchman once again, but face competition for his signature.
The newspaper reports that the player is currently using his holiday in the south of France to think carefully about his future.
The Dutchman has had a conversation with new Ajax coach Francesco Farioli about his future and he’s made it clear that he is a part of his plans for the club but would be willing to sanction a departure if need be.
They know that Ajax need to sell and Bergwijn is a player who can bring in a big sum, so the door is open and it’s up to the player to decide his future.
West Ham had already expressed their interest in the January transfer window but had to deal with Financial Fair Play at that point and never turned it into anything concrete. De Telegraaf say that’s not the case now, but the Hammers still need to sell first before being ablet o buy Bergwijn.
There is a feeling that he could be tempted by a move to the London Stadium, though, as he’s already lived in London when he played for Tottenham.
The big issue is the interest from Saudi Arabia, whose clubs can easily afford Ajax’s demands and the player’s wishes when it comes to wages as well. He needs to decide if, at 26-years-old, he wants to make the move there, though.
The implication is that he does not, and West Ham will have their chance, even if they ned to sell someone first.
