Needing a player to back up Lukasz Fabianski and potentially replacing him once the 36-year-old calls it a day, West Ham United went for the Alphonse Aréola option.

It’s a tried and tested solution, since the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Fulham and was one of their best players throughout the campaign, even if he wasn’t able to stop them from getting relegated.

Wanting to stay in London, where he had settled well, the goalkeeper got what he wanted, as the Hammers agreed on a temporary with an option to buy.

That should have put an end to any other stories involving West Ham and shot stoppers, and yet, it hasn’t.

Gazzetta dello Sport are the culprits on Thursday when looking at where some AS Roma players could go, including Robin Olsen, who was at Everton last season.

They explain that West Ham, Lille and Rennes are still on the case, but that seems very unlikely, unless the Hammers want to bring a third goalkeeper in now in case Fabianski retires at the end of the campaign, thus covering their backs early.

That is the only scenario we can conceive that would explain this, but it remains very unlikely.
